2022 winners’ projects work to build awareness of support for Asian victims of sexual assault, address social isolation in long-term care, and reduce food waste in the dining hall.

The winner of the 2020 SPARK Challenge, Sharene Gould Dulabaum ’22, centered her project around the major problem of excess waste on campus. After observing that many students failed to properly sort their trash into compost, landfill, and recycling, Dulabaum proposed a new system of centralized waste bins that would standardize and streamline the process of sorting waste, potentially saving the College thousands of dollars.

In the fall of 2019, the Wilson Center for Innovation and Leadership sponsored five students to attend the annual Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference.

Despite being closed to the public, 51²è¹Ýapp's maker lab (MLab) kept its machines running to support the 51²è¹Ýapp community and central Iowa through the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) and PPE-making tools.

BRASA Summit is a conference that gathers Brazilian college students studying outside their country and influential leaders to discuss some of the country’s main issues and to debate solutions.

The annual community-based competition partners students and key players from the town of 51²è¹Ýapp in conceiving projects that address the community’s critical needs.

Attendees whose backgrounds, abilities, genders and orientations could not be more different come together there to explore their mutual passion for technology’s transformative possibilities.

Over the 2018 spring break, with funding from the Wilson Center for Innovation and Leadership, senior Moises Herrera ’19 participated in an urban investigation and participation project with the DeriveLAB company in China’s Pearl River Delta region.
